Just realized I didn't have the link to March blog this entire time.... Oops. Well, you can go read up now.
Anyway, just been out here sellin' music. That's right. Selling. Music. Not giving away. (Well sometimes, you gotta promote.) I've made about 100 bucks in the past month just sellin CDS when I can. And I'm not standing outside for hours. I'm doin' it goin' to the corner store, to the weed shop, goin' to a music event I'm already planning on goin', and asking people if they want to support a local artist.
You get mostly no's, which is understandable. When you get a yes, or even better, you get someone asking you if they can get one, it feels good. So shout out to everyone who has a CD of mine somewhere. A lot of the old ones are rough mixes and demos I'd just throw out there. I do have a few actual projects out there and this is how I prefer to distribute them.
Online, is cool,
Artists nowdays don't know how to deal with rejection. They think they can surround themselves with fans and friends in a safe zone online. Na, there's always hate and rejection. If you have thousands of followers and only dozen to a hundred likes, then that means 90% of your "fans" didn't like it. Not all followers are fans, and not all fans are followers. Meaning, don't get caught on the numbers hype. I don't listen to %99 of people I follow. And I don't follow 99% of the artists I listen to. I don't really care about social media and all that. I want to hear the songs, not see you dinner picture. Just being real.
This is my site, my blog, and you don't have to read it if you don't want. Just don't click this page. Other sites bombard you with pics and text and vids. I don't even want to promote my stuff like that. Other sites have to many distractions. How can I watch your one vid, when there are suggestions on the side, purposely taking my attention away. A CD you put in, and let play. Its simple. It also sounds the best.
In theory, we have higher resolution music. In theory, not reality. Because more computing equals more noise, latency, etc. Most people don't even have good digital audio converters to play high quality music files. Built in audio for most computers, laptops, and phones actually sucks. They compress and do all sorts of stupid shit you don't want it to do. Sure, there are ways to bypass it, and all that. Get a nice CD player, and just play it. Sounds good doesn't it. The combo of the wav lossless audio with a good laser can't be beat.
Most audio recordings were not made to be heard in these higher bit rate blah blah blah file type this that whatever. So updating old songs is like puttin a grainy movie on bluray and call it remastered. Its really a buncha filters and post editing, that often makes it worse. If it ain't broke don't fix it. These classic albums are classic for a reason.
So keep thinking CDs are dead. Just like vinyl was dead. Just like casettes are dead. Sure. They will never go away. It might not be the number one medium for music. Who's to say it won't be again one day. Or maybe it will go to something else. Streaming can't be number one forever. Things always change. Maybe next will be USBs or something we don't even know about. I want to make my music eventually available online too. I put songs out here and there as promotional songs to hype up the projects or to just test the response. Until they pay, I'd rather be in control. If you like a digital copy, you can download them on this site. You still gotta pay tho.
I think giving away music feels comfortable to an artist, because if they get one stream, to them its a gain. Really, its not because you spent so much time and money making the song. One free stream doesn't do shit to recoup that. Start really thinking how to make money from your music. Payed shows. Never pay to perform. A free show is bad enough. You gotta promote sometimes. And open mics are free shows, but are great for gaining experience . Don't pay to perform tho, I'll say it again. Don't pay to perform. They will promise industry people will be there. Ok. Who? Everyone thinks they are in the "music industry". It will be you performing for the other artists and their crews, who all look upset they paid.
People think streaming money is where its at. Nope. Wrong. Its really the royalties when its comes to online. If you don't get the ownership royalties money from the stream, you're just gettin' the platforms fraction of a penny per stream. Then you need 1000 plays per song to get payed for it. Get outta here. I made $20 bucks last nite off CDs. Even after costs of pressin them up, I'm still making more then youtube and all that bullshit. Now I just gotta do it everyday. Add that up.
